A Readfield man was behind bars Thursday night following a high-speed chase that began in Winthrop and ended in Monmouth.

Christopher Fuller, 44, is charged with operating under the influence, eluding an officer and criminal speed greater than 30 mph over the posted limit.

Capt. Ryan Frost, interim police chief in Winthrop, said the incident began about 9:30 p.m. when the Winthrop officer on patrol saw a vehicle being driven erratically on U.S. Route 202 near Route 133.

“The officer turned to stop the vehicle, which then turned onto Annabessacook Road,” Frost said. He said the officer saw the vehicle speed up and activated his lights and siren. The vehicle continued on into Monmouth and turned onto Axelrod Road, a dirt road, and turned its lights off, Frost said.

He said that farther down road, the vehicle slowed and came to a stop and the driver, who was identified as Fuller, was removed from the vehicle.

Monmouth police assisted at the scene.

Fuller was taken to the Kennebec County jail and held in lieu of $1,700 bail. At an initial court hearing Friday afternoon via video at the Capital Judicial Center, a judge set bail for Fuller at $1,000 cash or $750 cash with a Maine Pretrial Services contract.
