A midcoast fisherman says he caught and released a giant lobster off the Maine coast last weekend, a crustacean that he estimates weighs about 20 pounds and is 3 feet long.

Ricky Louis Felice Jr. of St. George posted a photograph of the behemoth lobster on his Facebook page Monday.

In the photograph, Felice is shown standing on the deck of The Big Dipper – a lobster boat based in Friendship.

The lobster’s claws are the size of Felice’s arms and its carapace stretches from his neck to his waist.

Dr. Robert Steneck, a professor of marine sciences at the University of Maine, said he has seen lobsters that big on the floor of the ocean.

Steneck said, after looking at the lobster’s photograph, that his best guess is the lobster is a male and is no more than 50 years old.

“It’s a good size, but it is not outrageous,” Steneck said.
