Last month, my husband was diagnosed with severe spinal stenosis and underwent two neck surgeries in two weeks. He now is in the Acute Care Physical Rehabilitation Unit at MaineGeneral working hard trying to walk again and regain sensation in his hands and arms.

During his hospital time, we had five cords of wood delivered at our house. I was overwhelmed with the daunting task of having to stack the wood. But thanks to several members of the Winthrop-Monmouth football team who showed up the next couple of days, all that wood was safely stacked in the wood shed and ready for the winter’s cold.

While our thanks go out to these young men who gave of themselves and their time, the biggest thanks goes to their coach, Todd Park, a friend of our family, who spoke to these athletes reminding them that they were more than football players — they were human beings who should always remember to reach out and provide a service for those in need. I don’t know if it will be a winning season for this team or not, but they are all winners in our eyes.
