Fire destroyed an unoccupied house Tuesday morning on Madawaska Avenue in Pittsfield, according to the Pittsfield fire chief.

The fire was reported around 4:50 a.m. at 334 Madawaska Ave., Fire Chief Bernard Williams said.

The house and an attached barn belong to Dennis and Sherry Hennigan, of New Hampshire, and had not been occupied for about two weeks.

The fire’s cause is unknown and is being investigated by the Office of the State Fire Marshal. It is believed to have originated in the front of the house, Williams said.

“There was heavy fire showing in the front and on the roof,” he said. “The shingles were burning from the outside when we arrived.”

The house is considered a total loss, but the damage to the barn was minimal, Williams said.
