HALLOWELL —The Hallowell City Council will recognize Old Hallowell Day’s Citizen of the Year, Larry Davis, and Timson Community Service Award winners, the Bessey family, at its next City Council meeting Monday, Aug. 10, at 6 pm in City Hall on Winthrop Street. The meeting is open to the public, according to a news release from Jane Orbeton, Old Hallowell Day president.

The city council is recognizing Davis because, in his own words, he followed in the footsteps of his father-in-law Donald Huff and became a true Hallowell joiner. Since moving to Hallowell in 1986, he has served on the Old Hallowell Day Committee, including a stint as chairman. He served for 10 years on the city council, and has also been a board member of the Hubbard Free Library, the Hallowell Water District, Row House. He also has been harbormaster and president of the Hallowell Board of Trade.

For sponsoring and organizing Super Fun in Motion each year, providing so much family fun, the city council is recognizing Daisy, Emily and Ethan Bessey as 2015 recipients of the Barry S. Timson Award Community Service Award. This award is made to celebrate and memorialize the late Mayor Barry Timson; to recognize the efforts and achievements of young adults in the community; and to encourage the spirit of volunteerism, civic commitment and leadership, according to the release. Three years ago, Emily and Ethan Bessey were devastated when their son, Ezra, was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a genetic disease that robs the muscles of the ability to move. After Ezra died at only 8 months old, the Besseys started Hearts for Ezra, a nonprofit foundation with the mission of raising awareness and fighting for a cure for Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Through Super Fun in Motion and other community activities, the Besseys have raised more than $25,000 while educating many about SMA.
