Harold Violette was a coach and mentor in more ways than was mentioned in the newspaper’s recent article reporting his passing, (“Winslow coaching icon dies,” Aug. 6).
When I came to Winslow High School as the new assistant principal, Harold had been filling in at that position since the resignation of the previous assistant principal. The first morning I walked in, Harold’s first words to me were, “Am I glad to see you!”
He worked with me for a few days so that I could learn the layout of the school and the routine he had been following. He also had been substituting as the teacher of economics, a far cry from coaching football, but that was Harold.
Our principal, Leroy Blood, claimed that Harold could coach or teach anything he was asked to do.
Harold made my transition from being the principal of a small high school to the larger world of Winslow High School a most pleasant experience. To say that he was one of a kind may be an overstatement, but he was just that to me.
