Somerset Woods Trustees will hold their annual barbecue from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, at the Kennebec Banks Rest Area on US Route 2 in Skowhegan. The $5 cost will buy a hotdog or burger, chips and a soda, and the chance to enjoy lunch on the banks of the Kennebec. All donations will go to a fund that pays for mowing, sanitation and maintenance of the shelters, signage and clean-up, according to a news release from the trustees.
This year the rest area has received generous local support from Lynch Landscaping, Prudential Insurance, Hight Family of Dealerships, Skowhegan Saving Bank, Towne Motel, and Central Maine Power Co. In addition, kind donations have been received from the Skowhegan Rotary, GFWC Semper Fidelis Club, Skowhegan Woman’s Club, and Franklin Savings Bank.
The mission of the Somerset Woods Trustees is to protect lands in Somerset County that have significant natural or cultural resources and manage them in a sustainable way for public benefit, according to the release.
