Police in Jay arrested a Wilton man on charges that he had unlawful sexual contact with a girl under the age of 16 and then threatened to hurt her and her family if she told police about it.

Dwight Stanley, 52, is charged with the class C felony charge of unlawful sexual contact and a misdemeanor charge of terrorizing. A conviction on the felony charge is punishable by up to five years in prison, a $5,000 fine or both.

Jay police Detective Michael Mejia said he was alerted to the alleged abuse late last week and arrested Stanley on Wednesday. He said the conduct is alleged to have started sometime late last year.

“It’s been ongoing up until this point,” Mejia said. “The terrorizing comes from statements that the suspect made about what would happen if the victim was to say anything.”

The name and age of the child have not been released. Mejia said the Jay Police Department is checking Stanley’s record to see if he has any criminal history.

Mejia said the girl was interviewed at the Children’s Advocacy Center in Lewiston by a forensic professional who specializes in talking to younger children in sexual abuse cases. He said he couldn’t discuss the results of that interview.
