A Pittsfield man was sentenced to prison Tuesday for sexually assaulting a female family member under the age of 14.

Stephen S. Lowe, 39, pleaded guilty to a charge of gross sexual assault in Somerset County Unified Court, said Chief Deputy James Ross, of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, in a news release.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison with all but four years suspended.

Lowe also will be on probation for four years after his prison sentence is served and will be required to be a lifetime registrant of the Maine Sex Offender’s Registry.

Lowe has been out on bail since his arrest March 3, according to the release.

He was arrested after Somerset County Sheriff’s Office Detective Jeremy Leal investigated a complaint of unlawful sexual contact that had been turned over to the district attorney’s office by a caseworker at the state Department of Health and Human Services.
