WINTHROP — Nearly 400 people attended a recent reading and talk by inaugural poet Richard Blanco. Blanco, who read ‘One Day’ at Obama’s second inauguration, read from his memoir “The Prince of los Cocuyos” and shared other poems at the Winthrop Performing Arts Center. The event was sponsored by the Bailey Public Library, the Terry Roberts Memorial Fund and the Winthrop Library Foundation, according to a news release from the library.

“It was not only the biggest event we’ve done at the library, but the most special. And it showed us how a small community can support nationally prominent speakers and performers,” Library Director Richard Fortin said in the release.

Of Cuban descent, Blanco was invited to read a poem earlier this month at the newly reopened U.S. Embassy in Cuba.
