BANGOR — The Husson University football team held a 12-point lead after one quarter, but Alfred rallied to take a 39-25 non-conference win Saturday at the Winkin Complex.
Maleke Fuentes caught a pair of touchdown passes for Alfred (1-0) in the second quarter, as the Saxons scored 21 points to take the lead. Fuentes (55 rushing yards, 53 receiving) added a 7-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Husson quarterback Joe Seccareccia threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns, and his 31 yard touchdown pass to Deon Wiggins gave Husson (0-1) a 25-24 lead midway through the third quarter. Fuentes’ touchdown run gave Alfred the lead back for good with 3:34 left in the third quarter. Tyler Johnson’s 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter sealed the win for the Saxons.
Cony grad Rick Orio had five tackles for the Eagles. Gardiner’s Alonzo Connor, Lawrence’s Bryant Wade, and Oak Hill’s Luke Washburn each made four tackles for Husson. Maranacook grad Ian Palmer had three tackles and forced a fumble.
Ellis Throckmorton totaled a game-high 13 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery for the Eagles. Sweet added 10 tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Turcotte and Marquis Jiminez each had six tackles. Bryant Wade had 1.5 tackles for loss. Turcotte and Wade each recorded a quarterback hurry. Jordan Hersom broke up two passes.
Husson racked up 353 yards of total offense, compared to 313 by Alfred.
SUNY-MARITIME 30, MAINE MARITIME 0: Brett McKinney scored a pair of touchdowns to lead SUNY-Martime to the non-conference win over Maine Maritime in Throggs Neck, N.Y.
SUNY-Maritime outgained the Mariners, 386 yards to 276. Lawrence High grad Josh Doolan gained 94 yards of offense for MMA, 42 rushing and a career long 52-yard reception. Jake Doolan ran for 39 yards for the Mariners (0-1).
Gardiner grad Justin Lovely had four tackles for MMA.
Defensively, Collin Joyce recorded seven solo tackles to lead the Mariners, while Cody Chapman recorded a total of seven tackles, including 2.5 tackles for a loss and a sack. Michael Burgess made four total tackles, including a tackle for a loss and a fumble recovery in the red zone, late in the third quarter. Cody McDonald added three tackles, a broken up pass and an interception at the end of the first half.
Defensively, Kendal Parker led SUNY with 10 total tackles, including one tackle for a loss and an interception. Kameron Knight added eight total tackles, 3.5 for a loss and 3.5 sacks.
