A motorcyclist died in a collision with a sport utility vehicle about 1 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 295 in Falmouth.

Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said Alexander Small, 21, of Richmond died shortly after he arrived at Maine Medical Center Saturday.

McCausland said state police received calls about a motorcyclist weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed on the interstate near mile 11 northbound in Falmouth. He said Small came up behind a Honda Pilot in the travel lane and was unable to stop before hitting the rear bumper of the SUV.

Small crashed into the guardrail, McCausland said.

McCausland said alcohol was not a factor for the driver of the SUV. Blood results are pending for Small, he said.

No one was injured in the SUV, McCausland said, and Small was wearing a helmet.

No charges were filed because the evidence at the scene and witness statements show Small’s driving as the cause of the crash, McCausland said,
