AUGUSTA — The Cony and Mt. Blue boys soccer teams grinded through the heat at the CARA complex for a back-and-forth 3-3 tie in Cony’s home opener Tuesday.

“It was a tough game. Both teams played really hard. At times Cony dominated the game and at times Mt. Blue did,” Cony coach Jon Millett said.

“My hat goes off to all of the boys. To go 90 minutes in that heat…,” he added.

To help combat the heat, officials sent players to the sidelines at around the 20-minute mark of each half to take a water break and get a brief respite from the sun under the cover of their tents.

Cony’s Jeff Bilodeau scored the only goal of the first half off a Connor Perry assist.

Mt. Blue’s Tristan McFarlane tied the game five minutes into the second half with an assist from Alden Thompson-Vought. Brett Sproul answered to put the Rams back in front off an assist from Logan Testerman.

The Cougars scored twice in roughly a minute on unassisted goals by Sam Smith and Evan Backus to take their only lead. With 15 minutes to go, Perry knotted it up again at 3-3 by finding the back of the net on a penalty kick.

Joe Bowering made 14 saves for Mt. Blue (0-1-1), which plays its home opener Thursday against Mt. Ararat. Nick Robinson stopped 12 shots in net for Cony (1-0-1), which hosts KVAC Class A newcomer Camden Hills on Thursday.
