Maine State Police have charged an Eliot man with domestic violence assault after a woman was found injured alongside the highway in Freeport early Wednesday.
The woman, described as middle-aged, was found along the southbound Interstate 295 exit ramp leading onto Desert Road in Freeport at 1 a.m. by a Maine Department of Transportation worker.

She was treated for an eye injury at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Trooper Jodell Wilkinson arrested Wayne Covington, 59, who was taken to Cumberland County Jail in Portland, police said. Police say the assault likely occurred in a car in which the woman was a passenger.
Police would not describe the nature of the woman’s relationship with Convington.
