Rain or Shine Hike, 10 a.m. in Pownal

A Lesson in Hawks, 10 a.m. Sept. 22, in York

Late September is the time to be looking for migrating hawks, and a hawk identification lesson will be offered by York County Audubon in collaboration with the Mount Agamenticus Conservation Region. The lesson will be in the Learning Lodge at the summit of Mount Agamenticus, just off Mountain Road. The workshop is from 10 a.m. to noon, and then the group will move outside to identify passing hawks. The workshop leader is Katrina Felton, a biologist and naturalist who has worked as a counter for raptor migration projects in Maine and New Hampshire. Registration is required, along with a $10 fee. Surf casting class, 1:30 p.m. Oct. 3, in Cape Elizabeth

State Park manager Glenn “Doc” Dochtermann will be leading two more surf casting classes at coastal state beaches. Participants need only pay the park entry fee. The next class will be at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at Crescent Beach State Park in Cape Elizabeth. The last class will be at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 4 at Reid State Park in Georgetown. Dochtermann will show the equipment needed and then take the class fishing. Equipment and bait will be available to try, but Dochtermann encourages new fishermen to bring their own equipment.
