ALFRED — A Saco man has been indicted by a York County grand jury on charges of stabbing a grandmother to death at a Shaw’s supermarket last month.

Connor MacCalister, 31, was arrested shortly after the Aug. 19 incident in which Wendy Boudreau, 59, of Saco was killed.

MacCalister was arrested and has been held in York County Jail without bail while a psychological evaluation was scheduled. A grand jury met last week, handing up an indictment for intentional and knowing murder, though an announcement about the charge was not released until Monday.

MacCalister, who was born a female but identifies as a male, said he was “off my meds” at the time of the stabbing, which he later admitted to, according to court papers.

In the complaint filed when MacCalister was originally charged, Maine State Police Detective Kristopher Kennedy said MacCalister, who lived one street away from the Boudreaus in Saco, told police he was “angry with life” and “wanted to get back at someone.”

Police said MacCalister saw Boudreau in the parking lot and followed her into the store. He grabbed her from behind in the ice cream aisle and stabbed her in the throat, Kennedy wrote. One of her daughters and a grandchild were shopping in the store with Boudreau, but didn’t see the attack.

Two local emergency medical technicians were in the store at the time and immediately started administering medical assistance but she died later at Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford.

MacCalister and Boudreau did not know each other.

MacCalister had lived in a Biddeford group home, an arrangement where two or more individuals, typically with some type of disability, live and receive support from an agency.

Boudreau lived on Bonython Avenue in Saco with her husband, Jeffrey, for more than 30 years. They have adult children and often entertained their grandchildren, neighbors said shortly after her death.

Assistant Attorney General Leane Zainea had requested that MacCalister be evaluated for mental competency to stand trial, whether he has the mental faculty to be held responsible for the crime and whether he has any underlying mental illness.
