Ocean Renewable Power Co. in Portland, which develops and installs hydrokinetic energy systems, has opened a subsidiary in Montreal.

Énergies Marines Renouvelables Québécoises Inc., or EMARQ, will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of ORPC and work collaboratively with Quebec officials and organizations to install power generation systems in river and tidal environments. The first planned project is in Quebec’s Plan Nord, region, according to a release from the company. Marcel Boridy has been named vice president and general manager of EMARQ.

“ORPC is committed to investing in Quebec and making marine renewable projects a reality for the province,” said ORPC President and CEO Chris Sauer in the release. “(We are) building strong working relationships with the province’s public and private sectors.” ORPC has delivered power to a utility grid from a hydrokinetic tidal project it built in Maine’s Cobscook Bay, and to a local microgrid from a hydrokinetic river project in an Alaskan village. It is considered a global leader in hydrokinetic energy systems.
