A Bath man has been indicted by a grand jury on a dozen charges of assaulting a 4-month-old boy.

The Sagadahoc County grand jury indicted Payson Martin, 20, on multiple counts of aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child and assault on a child younger than 6.

The charges stem from a report in March from the Department of Health and Human Services to Bath police about a possible case of child abuse involving a 4-month-old that occurred over the previous two weeks, said Lt. Robert Savary. The boy that was known to Martin but Savary did not want to provide more details to avoid identifying the victim.

“There were significant injuries but not life-threatening and by all accounts the child has recovered,” Savary said. The boy is living with his family.

Detective Marc Brunelle arrested Martin on Monday.

Martin is being held at Two Bridges Regional Jail in lieu of $25,000 and is scheduled to appear in West Bath District Court on Nov. 17.

Savary said he is aware of no prior criminal record for Martin.
