MOUNT DESERT ISLAND — The Gardiner girls soccer team slipped into the Class B North tournament as the 12th and final seed after a strong yet at times inconsistent regular season.

“In the playoffs, we have new life and a new focus,” Gardiner coach Chad Kirk said.

They certainly showed as much Friday.

Lauren Chadwick scored in the first half and Tabytha Hembree stopped all 25 shots she faced to lift Gardiner past No. 5 Mount Desert Island 1-0 in a prelim game Tuesday.

The Tigers (6-6-3) will next play No. 4 Winslow (10-2-2) in a Class B North quarterfinal game Tuesday at a time to be determined.

“Lauren scored a nice goal,” Kirk said. “She used her left foot and put in the side of the net.”

MDI finished 10-5-0.

NO. 9 TRAIP 3, NO. 8 MT. ABRAM 0: The Rangers scored three goals in the second half to break open a close Class C South prelim game in Salem.

Emma Auclair, Kylie Chambers and Beti Stephens each scored for Traip (9-5-1), which will next pay top-seeded Sacopee Valley (13-0-1) in the quarterfinals.

Abby Brackley had 12 saves for the Roadrunners (4-8-3).

VALLEY 4, VINALHAVEN 2: Cody Laweryson scored two goals and assisted on another as the No. 10 Cavaliers doubled up Vinalhaven in a Class D South prelim game.

Keegan Farnham and Spencer Hunnewell scored the other goals for Valley (6-8-1), which will next play at Richmond on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Dillon Beane had 22 saves for Valley.

Isles Blackington had 13 for the Vikings.
