A driver who police say sped through a school zone before crashing his pickup truck was arrested Tuesday in South Thomaston on charges of driving to endanger and eluding a police officer.
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office said that Deputy John Hansen was running radar near the Guilford Butler School when a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado passed the school at 38 mph – the posted speed limit was 15 mph.
When the deputy tried to pull the vehicle over, the driver refused to stop. Hansen pursued the vehicle on Route 73 and onto Dublin Road in South Thomaston.
Hansen said the truck left the road five times, running over bushes, rocks and a well pump house building before leaving the road and rolling onto its side.
The driver, Brandon Demmons, 21, of Rockland, was arrested. The truck, valued at $9,000, was destroyed.
Neither Demmons nor his passenger, Joell Fogg, 48, of Rockland, was injured in the crash.
