FairPoint Communications has installed new technology in Anson and Madison that the company says will bring greater broadband speed to customers in the two towns.

The upgrade is expected to enhance Internet service to more than 1,850 homes and businesses, according to a news release issued Wednesday.

“Broadband access opens doors to the world for the residents and businesses in Maine and is fundamental to the state’s future economic growth,” said Mike Reed, FairPoint’s Maine state president, in the release. “We are pleased to announce we have upgraded the availability of high speed Internet to more homes and businesses in Madison and Anson.”

The new broadband service will bring speeds of up to 15 megabits per second, the release said. It is part of an overall $700 million investment by FairPoint in communications infrastructure and technology to reach new customers and expand their network in New England, according to the release.

Customers may qualify for different speeds based upon their distance from the central office that serves their specific location.
