SKOWHEGAN — The Office of Maine State Fire Marshal has issued an arrest warrant for a Skowhegan man suspected of setting fire to his Water Street apartment on Oct. 26, and a 14-year-old was charged in connection with an Oct. 20 fire.

The fire marshal plans to charge Peter E. Gray, 63, with arson, according to a news release from Steve McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety. Gray allegedly attacked firefighters who responded to the blaze and may face criminal charges from the Skowhegan Police Department.

In a separate case investigators charged a 14-year-old with arson for setting two small fires on the outside of his apartment building at 19 Pleasant St. at the corner of Bennett Avenue on Oct. 20. The boy was issued a summons to appear in court. He has been released to his parents.

Gray was injured in the smoky fire that destroyed his apartment at 378 Water St. at about 6 a.m. Oct. 26. The fire was contained in Gray’s apartment, and no other residents in the 11-unit apartment building were hurt, according to McCausland. Gray suffered smoke inhalation and was later released from the hospital.

Investigators suspect that Gray may be staying with friends or in a homeless shelter somewhere in the state. He is described as 5-foot, 6-inches tall with gray hair and weighs 145 pounds.

Dustin Tibbetts, the son of building owners Wayne and Becky Tibbetts, said Gray, who rents an apartment in the building, had been causing trouble there for a couple of weeks, but they have not been able to evict him.

On Oct. 17, Tibbetts said, Gray broke all the windows in his apartment and a window in the apartment next door. Tibbetts said he put plastic over the broken windows and finally put particle board over the windows on Monday.

Police are asking anyone with information about Gray’s whereabouts to contact the public safety dispatch center at 624-7076 or contact their local police station.
