There is a very simple solution to the uncharted waters of polling place videotaping: Don’t allow any activities other than voting at polling places.
I, for one, am tired of going to the polls and being greeted by candidates doing last-minute campaigning on my way in and accosted by representatives of special interest groups wanting me to sign their petitions on the way out.
If the petition signature gatherers weren’t there, no one would be there videotaping them. Further, if these people really cared as much about their pet causes as they claim to, they wouldn’t mind going outdoors and ringing some doorbells to get the signatures they need. It is out of sheer laziness that they prefer to stay in the nice warm polling place and harass a captive audience.
Why can’t we have a statewide law that makes the polling place a sacred place where people can come to exercise their duty to vote and not be bombarded by other political activities, whether those other activities are done by individual candidates or special interest petitioners?
Clear them all out. Let us vote in peace and maybe more than 50 percent of us would show up on Election Day.
