CLINTON — Two local people have been charged in connection with the theft of cash accidentally dropped by a customer of Galusha’s market on Main Street.

Police on Wednesday issued court summonses to Kendra Louise Ruland, 26, of Bush Road, for theft by unauthorized taking and Michael Benjamin Pratt, 30, of Tardiff Road, for theft by receiving stolen property. The charges are class E misdemeanors.

Clinton police Chief Craig Johnson said Thursday morning that the charges stem from Nov. 5, when Ruland and Pratt picked up more than $200 in cash that had fallen out of the pants of a man who was pumping gas at the Main Street market, then they left without trying to return the money. The man had a hole in his pocket, Johnson added.

According to Johnson, the incident was captured on the store’s surveillance cameras.

“It appears they waited for him to leave. Once he had left the area, that’s when they made their move,” Johnson said.

Most of the money was recovered, he added. A class E crime carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
