WALTHAM, MASS. — Josh Ocel scored on a strike from 30 yards out with 42.6 second remaining to power Brandeis University past Thomas College 2-1 in the opening round of the Division III men’s soccer tournament Saturday at Gordon Field.

Thomas (13-5-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when D.J. Nicholas found Willie Clemons on a through ball, but the advantage would not last. Brandeis (17-2-1) answered 10 minutes later when Patrick Flahive headed home a cross from the right side from Joshua Handler.

Clemons was issued a red card late in the first half, forcing the Terriers to play a man down for the remainder of the contest. Despite the disadvantage, Thomas managed to weather Brandeis’ onslaught until Ocel broke through with less than one minute remaining.

Brandeis held a 33-5 edge in shots and a 15-3 advantage in corner kicks. Joakim Sternas finished with 10 saves for Thomas while Brandeis goalkeeper Ben Woodhouse did not make a save.
