WATERVILLE — A pedestrian was taken to Inland Hospital Monday night after walking into traffic on Main Street and being struck by a vehicle, police said.
The accident was reported around 6:30 p.m. near 99 Main St.
Peter McGowan, 51, a transient, allegedly walked into traffic in an area that was not a crosswalk, said Sgt. Alden Weigelt of the Waterville Police Department.
McGowan was struck by a car driven by Henry Dillenbeck, 86, of Winslow. Weigelt said the accident occurred through “no fault of the driver” and that McGowan was “highly intoxicated.”
Police are not currently considering charges against either man, though the accident remains under investigation. McGowan was taken by ambulance to Inland Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, Weigelt said.
Adawna Brewer and her boyfriend, Damian Steele, both of Augusta, said they had encountered McGowan just moments before the accident happened at the Happy Trails store on Main Street. They said McGowan was acting drunk and “kept touching” Steele inside the store.
They asked him to stop and he walked further down the street, they said. Moments later they heard the accident.
A blockade was temporarily set up on Main Street but the street was open and cleared by 7 p.m.
