A Central Maine Power crew restored power to customers in parts of Fairfield, Waterville and Oakland after a power line went down on Old Center Road in Fairfield, according to CMP.

Sergeant Matthew Bard, of the Fairfield Police Department, said an officer in the area saw a downed live wire creating sparks on the side of the road just before 5 p.m. and called CMP to report it. CMP also received notice of the outage from customers who reported losing their power.

According to CMP’s website, as of 5:57 p.m., there were 1,664 customers without power in Fairfield and 100 customers without power in Oakland. The number of customers without power in Waterville was not available.

It was not immediately clear what caused the wire to go down.

“(There was) no accident, no tree falling, no apparent reason that I can see,” Sergeant Bard said. “The line just broke, which was enough to put the power out in a very large area.”

Sergeant Bard said CMP had arrived at the scene of the downed wire just before 6 p.m.
