On Nov. 6, I had the opportunity to attend a special event to honor local veterans presented by the seventh- and eighth-grade students at Messalonskee Middle School.

Grace McCarthy and the students, along with many volunteers, provided a breakfast for veterans and their families. We were then personally escorted into the auditorium for a student-led program. Music was provided by the high school band. A sampling of student writings, iMovies and performances in honor of veterans were presented by several seventh- and eighth-grade students.

We often hear about the bad things that some young people do, but very seldom do we hear about the good deeds that our young people achieve or do well. This well-planned student event has renewed my hope in the future.

This was my second year to attend this ceremony. I suggest that all area veterans plan to attend next year. I know I will be there.

A special thank-you to Ms. McCarthy, and the students for their inspired presentations. Thank you also to the parents for preparing the delicious breakfast.
