MONDAY

Christmas Bird Count, all day in York County

The 116th Christmas Bird Count is underway and proceeds into early January. Since the count began, it has relied on the dedication and commitment of volunteer citizen scientists.

Two Christmas Bird Counts are held in York County: The York count on Monday and the Biddeford-Kennebunkport count on Jan. 2. Teams of birders search areas, tallying the total number of birds seen. The York count extends from Moody Beach to Fort Foster, where 94 species were found last year. The Biddeford-Kennebunkport count extends from Parsons Beach in Kennebunk to the Cascades in Saco, where 85 species were found last year. Backyard birders can contribute by just looking at their feeders. Those interested in being a counter in the York area should contact Pat Moynahan at 284-5487. Those interested in participating in the Biddeford-Kennebunkport count should contact Marie Jordan at 799-1408. Email yorkcountyaudubon.org for more information.
