‘Pittston Fire Chief Jason Farris, center, directs fellow volunteers on Sunday to hand out fliers to residents that offer free fire detectors. Anyone who contacts the town office at 582-4438 before Dec. 18 will receive a detector along with free installation by the Fire Department. The installations will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Jan. 2, Farris said. He said there is no limit on the number of detectors firefighters can give out during the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign. Residents can have just two minutes to get out of a house once a fire breaks out, according to the American Red Cross. People die in a fire an average of seven times every day in the U.S., and someone is hurt every 40 minutes.
