AUGUSTA — An inmate from the Kennebec County jail was on life support at the hospital after apparently attempting suicide by hanging on Friday morning.

The incident began about 9 a.m. Friday, according to Kennebec County interim Sheriff Ryan Reardon.

“The inmate is currently at the MaineGeneral and his status is very critical,” Reardon said in an emailed news release. “The doctors were checking for brain activity. The inmate had a pulse when they left, and lifesaving measures were administered immediately by our staff and EMS responders.”

He said jail personnel were trying to reach the man’s family, so he was withholding the inmate’s name.

Maine State Police were notified, as was the state Department of Corrections, Reardon said.

No further information was available Friday night.
