FARMINGTON – A homeless Norway man has been charged with burglary and unauthorized use of property after staying in a Mt. Blue Motel room without renting it.

Chris Barnard, 65, was arrested Tuesday by Farmington police on charges of unauthorized use of property, burglary, theft of services and criminal trespassing, Farmington police administrative assistant Bonnie Pomeroy said.

Barnard had rented the room over the weekend but had checked out Sunday. When the door appeared to be locked from the inside, the motel owner believed that Barnard had continued his stay without having rented the room.

The motel owner called Farmington police to check on the room Tuesday afternoon and officer William Tanner found Barnard in the room.

According to court documents, Barnard told police he was homeless and that he found the door to the room open and entered to find a warm place to sleep. He also told police he had been asked to leave the Western Maine Homeless Outreach Shelter.

Barnard was arraigned Wednesday morning by video from the Franklin County Jail to Rumford District Court. Barnard remains at the jail in lieu of $150 bail.
