UNITY — All-original acoustic rock will fill the Unity College Center for the Performing Arts in January as Whaler’s Run, whose sound is inspired by Mid-coast Maine, will play the venue at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15.

Founded in Spring 2013 by Gary Barbeck and Todd Bowen, Whaler’s Run came about as an acoustic alternative to the “full band” setting and a way to experiment with different sounds.

Bowen and Barbeck met in 2009 while playing together in another project. Barbeck is a veteran of the South Jersey music scene, playing in original and cover bands, while Bowen is a Unity College graduate and self-taught guitar player. Whaler’s Run was founded as Bowen and Barbeck started showcasing their new material at South Jersey and Philadelphia-area open mic nights.

They were joined by Carman Daddario on bass guitar, another longtime South Jersey musician, and the three clicked, quickly developing their own distinctive style.

Starting with a small but loyal following, the band has experienced increased exposure and popularity in Midcoast Maine and in New Jersey. The band’s mantra: “If you have fun playing music together, everything else will follow.”

Maintaining its strong local ties, the band is donating all ticket sales to the Unity College Center for the Performing Arts, and Bowen promises to perform his song about Unity, bringing music back to his roots to help support the performing arts.

Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased online at secure2.unity.edu/payments/tickets/173.
