There comes a time when technology for most of us no longer benefits but instead travels to the land of silliness. I like technology, but I don’t understand some things I see.

Lights on vehicles is one area where I scratch my head and ask, “How did we get here?”

Emergency vehicles are a good example. Police cars are the least offensive. Most police cars have appropriate warning lighting and stick to the color blue. Firetrucks, especially the new ones, have lights on the top, sides, rear, front and some I have seen have blue lights mixed with red lights.

Ambulances are on the top of the mountain for silliness. There are lights in so many places and the colors on the ambulances I see are red, white and blue. Ambulances not only take No. 1 for silly lights but they have sirens that can make multiple sounds, which mocks an arriving parade with little beeps, long deep tones and whaling sirens with everything in between.

Public works vehicles have so many red and yellow lights flashing I can’t tell when their blinker is on.

White flashing lights seem to be the new trend on vehicles, but I have to ask, “Are there any laws pertaining to white flashing lights?” When I was younger there was no such thing.

Flashing lights on speed limit signs, in front of businesses, and just about everywhere else we can think of. Do we need all these lights? I don’t know. What I do know is I am becoming light desensitized. I see them, and they all look alike, and I just don’t care anymore.

I know it’s a matter of time before Rudolf, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, is leading the way with a multicolored LED flashing light bar, and that will be truly silly.
