A Gardiner man was found dead Saturday in his vehicle in the median along Interstate 295 in Gardiner. Maine State Police continue to investigate the crash.
It was not immediately clear how long Ian Carter, 27, of Gardiner, had been there. He was found inside his Honda Civic.
Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said troopers believe the crash may have occurred on Dec. 28.
“His car went off the road into the median, became airborne and struck a tree, some 25 feet off the ground,” McCausland said in a media release. “Because of the traumatic injuries, Carter was killed as a result of the crash. The car then came to rest down a steep embankment and was discovered late Saturday morning by a passerby in the southbound lane, who saw a reflection off the car in the woods.”
McCausland said investigators reported that Carter was seen leaving work in southern Maine on Monday. The crash occurred off the northbound lane near exit 49 to U.S. Route 201, so troopers believe it occurred as he was driving home.
Published reports show that Carter was a 2006 graduate of Gardiner Area High School, where he was an accomplished saxophone player. He also attended Southern Maine Community College.
Carter’s FaceBook page indicates he was from Gardiner but most recently lived in Portland.
