Grants of up to $1 million are being made available to small shipyards in Maine.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration announced that it intends to award grants for the improvement of qualified shipyard facilities to improve efficiency, competitive operations and quality ship construction, repair and reconfiguration.

The ceiling for the grant is $1 million and applications are being accepted through Feb. 16.

Eligible shipyards must not have more than 1,200 production employees, and must construct, repair or reconfigure vessels 40 feet in length or greater for commercial or government use, or construct, repair or reconfigure vessels 100 feet in length or greater for non-commercial vessels.
