DEXTER — Maine fire officials say a fire ripped through the roof of a technical education center in Dexter.

WCSH-TV reports that a police officer spotted the fire at the Tri-County Technical Center and alerted fire officials at 2:14 Saturday morning.

Dexter Fire Chief Matt Connor says firefighters got the fire under control in about an hour, but the building suffered significant smoke and heat damage.

Connor says he expects programs at the center will have to be postponed until the building can be repaired.

The center provides technical and occupational training to students from six area high schools.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
