A section of South Monmouth Road in Monmouth was closed for a time Monday after Sunday’s heavy rain washed out a culvert.
Police Chief Kevin Mulherin said the road was closed between Fish Hatchery and Cobbossee roads as town public works crews work to repair the washout.
“It’s a pretty good size,” Mulherin said.
The washout occurred around 7:30 a.m. Monday. The road reopened around noon.
The washout did not cause an accident. Mulherin said it was “a good thing” the opening occurred during daylight hours when it could be more easily spotted.
The washout was created by runoff from more than 2 inches of rain that fell Sunday and through part of the overnight, Mulherin said.
