AUGUSTA — Maine Right to Life is hosting its “Hands Around the Capitol” event.
Executive Director Teresa McCann-Tumidajski says there are more abortions each year than deaths from cancer or heart disease. Saturday’s protest is aimed at protesting the Supreme Court Roe v Wade decision that legalized abortion on Jan. 22, 1973.
Planned Parenthood of Northern New England says it’s important to resist efforts to restrict abortions.
The event begins with a Mass and prayer service before a march to the Statehouse.
Bishop Robert Deeley, leader of Maine’s Roman Catholic, is joining in the event along with Maine Gov. Paul LePage. The capitol bell will be rung 43 times – one for each year since the supreme court decision.
