Julia Curran of Westbrook and Franz-Peter Jerosch of Yarmouth made their national debut as a juvenile pairs team a successful one, winning silver medals at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships Saturday night at the Bloomington Ice Garden in suburban Minneapolis.

Curran, 12, and Jerosch, 14, improved by more than five points from their runner-up performance at Eastern Sectionals in November and finished with a score of 40.60 Saturday night. Not since 2008 had a figure skater from Maine medaled at the national championships.

Juvenile is the lowest of five levels represented at nationals. Curran and Jerosch will move up to intermediate next winter.

Midwestern champions Isabelle Martins and Ryan Bedard won gold Saturday with a score of 42.37 points. Curran and Jerosch edged bronze medalists Cate Fleming and Jedidiah Isbell of the Skating Club of Boston by 700ths of a point (40.53). Jenna Gordon and Ian Meyh of New Jersey were another 100th of a point back in 40.52 for pewter.

Curran and Jerosch are the only Maine skaters to qualify for the national championships at any level. They teamed up last February, after Jerosch had finished eighth in juvenile pairs at nationals with an older partner.

Curran is a seventh-grader at St. Brigid’s School in Portland. Jerosch is a freshman at Yarmouth High.
