Travel turmoil already was in full swing at the Portland International Jetport on Friday night, with over half the flights in and out of the airport canceled as a big storm bore down on the mid-Atlantic region.

And Saturday looked even worse, with only two arrivals, from Detroit and Charlotte, North Carolina, and three departures, to Charlotte, Atlanta and Detroit, still expected as of 9 p.m. Friday night.

Even before a single flake of what was promised to be a monster snowstorm had reached New York City, more than half of the flights going through the jetport within a 24-hour period had been canceled.

Airport Director Paul Bradbury had warned late Thursday that the travel delays could continue through the weekend.

“Even from one hiccup it is difficult to recover,” he said.

With accumulations expected to range from 1 1/2 feet in New York City to 2 feet or more in the nation’s capital, the hiccups could last for days.
