George O’Keefe Jr., a Democrat, has filed to run for the Senate District 14 seat representing several towns and cities in central Maine, according to a news release sent out by his campaign.

A Winthrop resident, O’Keefe is an intelligence analyst in the Maine Army National Guard and a volunteer firefighter. A veteran of the Afghanistan war, he is a graduate of The Catholic University of America and is completing work toward a master’s degree. He also is vice president of the YMCA Camp of Maine board of directors.

“As a resident, father and firefighter in Winthrop, I know we can make better decisions and craft policies that grow our local economies, support a 21st-century infrastructure and ensure a secure future for all Maine families,” he said in the press release.

The seat is held now by Sen. Earle McCormick, R-West Gardiner. The district consists of Chelsea, Farmingdale, Gardiner, Hallowell, Manchester, Monmouth, Pittston, Randolph, Readfield, West Gardiner and Winthrop.
