Barbara Buck, widow of Ken Buck Sr., was appointed Monday to serve in his seat on Winthrop Town Council until the June election.
Her husband died Dec. 30, 2015. He was in the final year of his third term on the council.
A June special election will then be held to fill the final six months of the term. The three-year term will be on the November ballot.
Barbara Buck took the seat immediately after being sworn in Monday, Town Manager Peter Nielsen said.
In other action at the regular council meeting, councilors approved a proposed contract for $36,067 with Don Cadwell, who will provide 24 hours per week of assessing services to the town for the 2016-2017 year.
Fire Chief Dan Brooks indicated he hopes to have cost estimates soon for the construction of a fire station on town-owned property on U.S. Route 202.
In October 2015, councilors approved spending $7,000 to design and study construction of a $2.1 million fire station on 3 acres next to the former Carleton Woolen Mills building.
At that time, councilors expressed the hope the new station could be erected without affecting property taxes.
