The people of Maine achieved a great victory last November when we passed, by a double-digit margin, increased support for the Clean Elections system. The law allows candidates for our state legislative and gubernatorial offices to collect minimal contributions from supporters and receive public financing to run successful campaigns. In return these candidates agree not to obtain additional funding from any outside sources. We can be assured that when elected our Clean Elections candidates will represent the interests of their constituents not those of outsiders with their own political agendas.

For the law to be fully implemented and allow the maximum number of candidates to run Clean Elections campaigns, the LePage administration and the Legislature must fund the law as the voters intended. The money is there. It is now time for our policymakers to do the right thing and fully fund our first-in-the nation Clean Elections initiative.
