Canaan residents will consider raising $10,000 for a new veterans memorial Saturday at Town Meeting.

The meeting will take place at 9 a.m. at the Canaan Elementary School and will include voting on 32 warrant items.

Elections will be held from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at the Canaan Town Hall. The only contested race is between Ray Judkins and Michael Robinson for road commissioner.

The total amount of money that residents are being asked to raise for this year’s municipal budget was not available from the Town Office. First Selectman Dan Harriman said there are no major changes in expenses compared to last year’s budget, aside from a request that the town raise $68,000 this year to buy a new plow truck.

Last year the town raised $50,000 to put toward the purchase of a new firetruck, and that expense has been eliminated this year, Harriman said.

This year’s proposed budget “is just raising money to continue to work on road maintenance and replace worn-out equipment,” he said.

One other additional expense residents are being asked to consider this year is $10,000 for a new veterans memorial, something the town has been working on for about 25 years.

In October residents approved spending $13,000 from a reserve account to fund the monument, which initially will contain the names of all Canaan military veterans from the Civil War through World War II and is set to be erected near the Canaan Public Library on Route 23. Harriman said that if the extra $10,000 is approved Saturday, the monument will be fully funded.

Other large-ticket items that residents will consider Saturday include $332,366 for town expenses, $175,000 for road improvements, $157,600 for winter road maintenance, $91,900 for summer road maintenance and $67,000 for the Canaan Fire Department.

Incumbent selectmen Garrett Buzzell and Dan Harriman are running for one-year terms on the Board of Selectmen.

Incumbent school board member Dixie Ring is running for a three-year term on the board of School Administrative District 54.
