Highlights of the Burnham Town Meeting and election held Saturday.

BUDGET: About $600,000 plus up to $800,000 for roads.

MAJOR ITEMS APPROVED: To borrow up to $800,000 to pave Battle Street and Basford, Dodge, Garcelon and Lasalle roads, as well as part of Winnecook Road and part of North Horseback Road; $40,000 for new fire protection gear and a generator for the fire station to be used for emergencies.

MAJOR ITEMS REJECTED: None

ATTENDANCE: 60-65 people

CONTESTED ELECTIONS: Selectman: incumbent Selectman Anne Goodblood defeated challenger Brent Chase for a three-year term, 150-122; incumbent Road Commissioner Roger W. Huff defeated challenger Charles R. King for a one-year term, 147-123; Treasurer Arlene Miles re-elected for a one-year term; write-in Brian Whitney was elected to the School Administrative District 53 board of directors; write-in Melissa Belanger elected to cemetery committee.

REFERENDUMS: Question 1, asking voters to make the road commissioner an appointed, rather than an elected position, defeated 211-62; Question 2, whether to authorize selectmen to negotiate and enter into a contract for waste disposal with the town of Pittsfield, defeated 190-80.
