CLERMONT, Fla. — The Colby College softball team scored four runs in the fifth inning on its way to a 6-0 win over St. Lawrence on Sunday in the Mules’ season opener.

Julia Saul went the distance to pick up the win for Colby, scattering five hits over seven innings while walking none and striking out a pair. Katie McLaughlin went 3 for 4 with a pair of runs scored out of the lead-off spot for the Mules, while Robin Spofford was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and a walk.

BASEBALL

OBERLIN 8-12, COLBY 1-5: The Yeomen pounded out 13 hits in each game to sweep a doubleheader with the Mules in Tuscon, Arizona.

Colby tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh of the opener when Dan Csaplar led off with a double and later scored on a throwing error. The Mules (1-3) got the winning run to third with one out in the inning but could not get the run across, and Oberlin made the Mules pay with seven runs in the top of the eighth.

Csaplar had a pair of RBIs and a run scored as the Mules built a 4-0 lead after the top of the third inning in the nightcap, but Oberlin (2-4) responded with five runs in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead for good.

JOHNSON & WALES 4-3, THOMAS 1-0: The Terriers were limited to just eight hits on the afternoon to drop both games in a doubleheader against the Wildcats in Providence, Rhode Island.

Keith Grant went all seven innings in the opener, allowing one run on two hits while striking out six. Hank Vinall crossed the plate for the lone Thomas (1-3) run when Isaiah Arana was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth. Grant worked out of the jam, though, and Johnson & Wales (8-3) scored all four of its runs in the bottom half of the inning on three singles and a wild pitch.

Brandon Rainville kept the Terriers scoreless in the second game, as he gave up six hits and three walks while striking out eight in six innings before giving way to Brandon Cesino for the save.

FISHER 8, UM-FARMINGTON 4: Reinaldo Moreta, Xavier Feliz and Kyle Anulao each had two hits to lead Fisher (9-12) past the Beavers at Fraser Field in Lynn, Massachusetts.

The Beavers (2-1) scored all four of their runs in the top of the ninth on a two-run double from Riley Chickering, RBI single by Hallowell’s Taylor Lockhart and ground out by Tyler Flayhan.

MEN’S LACROSSE

WHEELOCK 11, UM-FARMINGTON 4: Messalonskee graduate Casey Wrigley scored a pair of goals but it was not enough as the Beavers (0-3) fell to Wildcats in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Eddie Romero had fives goals to lead Wheelock (4-3) while Keenan Brown added three scores.
