An investigation into the cause of a fire that destroyed a mobile home on Trafton Road in Oakland Saturday will continue Monday, according to Oakland fire Chief David Coughlin.

Coughlin said Sunday that investigators from the state fire marshal’s office had not made a determination by late Saturday as to the cause of the fire, which destroyed the mobile home of Ted and Jean Brown at 431 Trafton Road and appears to have started outside the home.

The Browns are away for the winter. Family members told fire officials that the last time a family member had been at the home was about a week ago, according to Coughlin.

“Fire investigators are going to be back in town tomorrow to continue their investigation,” Coughlin said Sunday afternoon. “They were there until about 9 last night, and they’re going to be back in town to do some more interviews.”

The fire was reported at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Firefighters from several towns fought the fire, which was difficult to fight because of high wind. The home is located on a hill just about at the Waterville city line and about a half-mile from Middle Road in Oakland.

Coughlin said Saturday night that “it didn’t look right,” meaning that the fire appeared to have started outside, yet the family was not there. He called the state fire marshal’s office in to help determine a cause.

About three dozen firefighters from Oakland, Belgrade, Sidney, Rome and Fairfield worked at the scene Saturday, and Waterville firefighters brought a cascade truck, which carries air to fill firefighters’ air bottles. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were able to salvage some items from the home, including rifles and pictures.
