Emergency responders rescued a dog that reportedly fell through the ice on Echo Lake Monday afternoon, according to Readfield Fire Chief Lee Mank.

Mank said the black, mixed-breed dog was pulled from shallow water around 5 p.m. more than 100 feet from shore in a rescue that took about an hour. More than 20 responders were involved, including several in dry suits.

The dog’s owner first attempted to get his dog out of the water after kayaking out to him, but that attempt was unsuccessful.

“The dog decided he wanted to go play on the ice,” Mank said. “He is doing fine. We gave him a blanket, and he was warmed up in one of our trucks.”

Mank said the dog went into the water on the Fayette side of the lake near Point Drive. Responders from Readfield, Mount Vernon, Vienna, Wayne, Manchester, Winthrop and Fayette.
