PITTSFIELD — Gregory Vigue, of Pittsfield, an Maine Central Institute senior, was selected to receive the 2016 Principal’s Award, Headmaster Christopher Hopkins announced in a news release. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and school citizenship.
“Greg is the salutatorian of his class, a leader on the football, basketball and baseball teams, and is involved in countless other activities and leadership roles at Maine Central Institute,” Hopkins noted in presenting the award to Vigue, according to the release. “In his thoughtful, modest and resolute way, he has worked hard all four of his years at MCI and has inspired others to do the same. He cares for and supports other students, young or old, and in particular stands up for those who need support. Outside of school he earned his Eagle Scout badge, has held physically demanding jobs during the summer, and is an avid outdoorsman and naturalist.”
Vigue served as captain of football and basketball his senior year. In addition, he has been a member of the National Honor Society, Student Leadership Committee, the Key Club, the Philanthropy Council, Captains’ Club and the Student Council. Vigue has served as a peer tutor and student mentor as well as class president. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout in 2014. Vigue is the son of Emily and Andi Vigue, of Pittsfield.
Vigue, Hopkins and other award winners and their principals will attend an honors luncheon April 2 at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor. The luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler. McGowan and Tyler were former Maine principals and executive directors of the Association.
The Principal’s Award is presented in more than 100 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine’s school administrators.
